What is ADHD masking?

ADHD masking is a conscious or subconscious social survival strategy where neurodivergent individuals suppress their natural traits to mimic neurotypical behaviour. It involves monitorng one's actions, speech, and impulses to avoid social rejection, stigma, or the perception of being "difficult."

In the framework of Neuroenergetics, masking is an expensive energetic tax. You have likely done everything expected of you—you showed up, you provided, and you pushed through. Yet, there is a gap you can’t explain: a quiet tension in your chest that appears when you are finally alone. This is the physiological cost of maintaining a high-functioning facade. You built a mask that performs well and keeps the family unit functioning, but behind it, you have lost the ability to feel like yourself.

From a nervous system perspective, masking keeps the body in a state of chronic hyper-vigilance. While it may protect you from external criticism, it creates an internal disconnect. When we suppress our natural sensory needs or cognitive rhythms, we deplete our energetic reserves, often leading to sudden irritability or "shutdowns" once the public performance ends.

The goal of our work at Spiral Hub is to bridge this gap. We move from performing to being. As one father of three shared: "I used to snap, shut down, or escape. Now my kids run to me. I'm not fixing everything—I'm feeling everything. That changed the game." By reducing the energetic drain of the mask, you reclaim the capacity for genuine connection.
